With all of the cold weather this has been the perfect week to read two of my favorite winter stories. On Wednesday we read The Mitten by Jan Brett. In this story a little boy named Nikki loses one of the mittens his grandmother knitted for him. Several woodland animals take refuge it in to stay warm. It isn’t until the mouse crawls in and causes the bear to sneeze that the mitten and all of the animals inside go flying through the air and Nikki finds it.
Then today we read another story by Jan Brett called The Hat. In this story a curious hedgehog sticks his head in a stocking hat and it gets stuck. Soon all the farm animals are coming around to chuckle at silly Hedgie's stocking hat. But in the end Hedgie gets the last laugh.
We also worked together as a class to sort events from each story and organize them on the pocket chart.
We have also been learning how animals survive during the cold winter season. We read Animals In Winter and made our very own book about which animals hibernate, migrate and stay active.
