Harriet’s Halloween Candy

This morning we read Harriet’s Halloween Candy by Nancy Carlson.  In this story Harriett learns the hard way that sharing her Halloween candy makes her feel better than eating it all herself.  Thanks to everyone bringing a bag of candy this week we were able to share our candy with everyone in the class and use it to practice many of the math skills that we have been working on.  CIMG1349

We began by estimating how many pieces were in our bag then we counted them to find out the actual number.  We also sorted our candy lots of different ways . . . like chocolate and not chocolate, big and small, favorite and not favorite.  After we sorted it by types of candy we graphed how many of each kind we had.CIMG1336CIMG1340CIMG1344CIMG1332CIMG1342CIMG1343

Thanks again to all of the parents who sent candy.  It really made learning so much fun . . . and yummy!!!

Kelly,

This is one of my favorite lessons and I cannot find any of my blacklines. Do you have a resource where you got the sorting sheet and graphing sheet from. I know this originally came from an AIMS unit but I can't seem to find it on their sight. Any help that you can give me would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Susie
