Ice Cream FUN

Last week the main story in our reading book was called Miss Jill’s Ice Cream Shop.  On Friday I decided to surprise the kids with a day filled with ice cream themed fun.  We began by reading a big book about how ice cream is made.

Then we did an activity that focused on facts/opinion about ice cream.  Students worked with a partner to read a sentence and decide if it was a fact or opinion.  This was the first time we have done anything like this so it was a bit tricky for a few of us!!!  clip_image004clip_image006clip_image002[6]

When we were done we wrote our own fact and opinion about ice cream.clip_image004[9]

We also did a few problem solving activities.  This one involved using three flavors of ice cream (chocolate, vanilla and strawberry) to find out how many combinations there were for making a double dip cone.  There was also one that involved making a triple dip cone but I didn’t get any pictures of it!!!

To end the day we made ice cream.  Everyone brought a pair of gloves from home and we worked together with our friends to make a bag of ice cream.

After adding all the ingredients, we put our baggie inside a large bag of ice and salt and shook it.

Talk about some noisy fun!!!

Then we enjoyed our ice cream . . . yum, yum!!!

Thanks Jen!!! Most of the stuff you saw was part of Cara Carroll's "Ice Cream unit". We just added a few of our own touches to it. You should definetly check out her blog "The First Grade Parade".
